Damián García Olmo, Professor of Surgery and Chief of Surgery Department at “Fundacion Jimenez Díaz” University Hospital (Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain), outlines the latest medical advances involving stem cells.

Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) research has developed rapidly during the last decade and the promising results obtained from in vitro and in vivo studies have generated growing optimism. Although bone marrow is the most often used source, MSCs with similar biological properties have also been isolated from other tissues including adipose tissue, skeletal muscle and cord blood.
